Gill brings stability to India’s top-order

India’s vice-captain, Shubman Gill, continued his sensational form with a record-breaking century in the third and final One-Day International against England at the Narendra Modi Stadium on Wednesday. The 25-year-old opener reached his seventh ODI century off just 95 balls, further solidifying his reputation as one of the format’s most consistent batters. This remarkable knock also saw him achieve two significant milestones: Gill became the fastest batter to reach 2,500 ODI runs in just 50 matches, surpassing South Africa’s Hashim Amla, who previously held the record with 51 innings. Additionally, he crossed the 5,000 international runs mark in just 131 innings across all formats.

His stellar performances in the series propelled him to second place in the latest ICC ODI batting rankings, overtaking India’s captain Rohit Sharma. With scores of 87 and 60 in the first two ODIs, Gill had already positioned himself for a top spot, and his century in Ahmedabad further bolstered his standing among the world’s elite batters.

Gill’s impressive run at Ahmedabad continued, where he has now become synonymous with dominant batting. In February 2023, he posted his highest T20I score—an unbeaten 126 against New Zealand at the same venue. A month later, he scored his maiden Test century at the ground against Australia in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, making 128 off 251 balls. Across nine innings in Ahmedabad, Gill boasts an exceptional average nearing 80, making it his second most productive venue after Harare Sports Club in Zimbabwe, where he has also accumulated over 400 runs.

Gill’s knock of 112 runs off 102 balls, including 14 boundaries and three sixes, ended with him departing after an outstanding performance.
