In the early hours of February 17, 2025, Delhi and its surrounding regions experienced a 4.0 magnitude earthquake at 5:36 am. The National Center for Seismology pinpointed the epicenter near Jheel Park in Dhaula Kuan, at a shallow depth of five kilometers. Residents across Delhi-NCR reported feeling strong tremors, with many noting an unusual loud sound accompanying the quake. This auditory phenomenon is attributed to the quake’s shallow depth, causing seismic waves to reach the surface more rapidly and intensely. Fortunately, there have been no immediate reports of damage or injuries. Prime Minister Narendra Modi urged citizens to remain calm and vigilant for potential aftershocks, emphasizing that authorities are closely monitoring the situation. Delhi, situated in Seismic Zone IV, is prone to significant seismic activity, underscoring the importance of preparedness and adherence to safety protocols.
Notable Earthquake’s Affecting Delhi-NCR
April–May 2020: A series of earthquakes struck the Delhi-NCR region. On April 12, a 3.5-magnitude quake hit northeast Delhi, followed by a 3.4-magnitude tremor in the same area on May 10. Later, on May 29, a stronger 4.4-magnitude earthquake occurred near Rohtak, approximately 50 kilometers west of Delhi. The Rohtak quake triggered over a dozen aftershocks, leading to continued seismic activity in the region.
April 25, 2015: A powerful 7.8-magnitude earthquake struck Nepal, with tremors strongly felt across Delhi-NCR. The shaking caused widespread evacuations and minor structural damage in the city.
March 5, 2012: A 5.2-magnitude earthquake, with its epicenter near Delhi, caused panic among residents. However, no major damage was reported.
September 7, 2011: A 4.3-magnitude earthquake struck near Delhi, leading to noticeable tremors and prompting people to vacate buildings as a precaution.
November 25, 2007: A 4.7-magnitude earthquake shook Delhi, causing minor structural damage and underscoring the region’s seismic vulnerability.
October 8, 2005: A devastating 7.6-magnitude earthquake in Kashmir sent tremors across Delhi.
